A 2.3.4: Inquiry and Literacy

Prompt: Learning how to research can transform you.

This article reminded me of me. The reason why I say this is because when I start researching a subject I expect to find a definite answer to my question. I’m not thinking about evidence and what I can do with it. That’s why I believe I have so much trouble doing research. I want everything to be concrete. The author of this article is correct in stating that people just pile up info and they have a terrible time deciding what info is useful and what isn’t. I am one of those people. I guess I really never learned to research any other way. But this semester I feel a transformation-taking place. I am learning to take a closer look at all the documents I locate and not just a quite glance and throw it in the pile. I am discovering what info is useful to my purpose and this is no easy feat. Learning to research is hard for a lot of us computer illiterate people. I have spent hours going through useless info and I know that I will spend many more.

There is one passage of the article that really made me think about my learning experience and I wish every teacher felt this way. Evidently the author feels that “Creating a setting of mutual respect and nutritive support where each student can learn what you want them to learn” is the best way to learn. I agree wholeheartedly with this approach. It is so hard to sit in a classroom and not understand what’s going on but you’re too embarrassed to ask questions. Its awful to feel left out and also scary because if you ask everyone will think you’re ignorant and wonder how you made it this far and if you don’t ask questions then you’re really gonna be lost. I know exactly how this feels because I have been like this for most of my life. So creating an environment where every learner can feel comfortable sounds like music to my ears. “Meeting students where they are” is gift that only the most talented teachers have. Hopefully it will become contagious and spread like wildfire.
